Makers

Every item can have a maker. The app calls makers whatever fits the collection type: artists for art, authors for books, vintners for wine, brands for luxury goods, mints for coins, themes for LEGO. This page says "maker" for all of them.

Where makers live

• With the default Artist Folders layout, the collection page groups items by maker. Tap a folder to see that maker's items.
• With Settings ▸ General ▸ Library Layout set to Split, makers get their own section in the sidebar and tab bar, labelled after the type: Artists, Authors, Brands and so on.
• The makers list has a jump-to-letter index and marks makers who have died with a Deceased badge.

Adding a maker

Makers are usually created from the item form: type a new name and it is created when you save. Many types come with a starting roster, so the suggestions are useful from the first item. To add one directly, use New maker (⇧⌘A on the Mac) from the makers list.

The maker record

Press Edit on a maker to fill in:

• Identity: the name, which is required, and Nationality. Suggest looks the name up on Wikidata and fills in the nationality when it can.
• Life: Birth Year and Death Year.
• Practice: Movement and a Website URL.
• Based in, the place the maker works from. This is what the Insights map plots. Type a city or country and the app locates it; the status line reads Located on the map. or Couldn't locate that place. If it is empty, the map falls back to the nationality.
• Wikipedia. Search Wikipedia finds the maker's page and pulls the summary into the biography. The maker page then shows Biography sourced from Wikipedia, with Refresh from Wikipedia and Clear Wikipedia Link.
• A Cover Image and Notes.

The maker page shows the biography, movement, mediums used, website and career details, plus every item by that maker.

Duplicate makers

When the same maker has been entered twice with slightly different spellings, merge them:

• On the Mac, Actions ▸ Merge Duplicate Artists… lists every group of makers with the same name. Choose which to keep, then Merge… on a group or Merge All…. The keeper is the record with the most items; empty fields on the keeper are filled from the merged records.
• Tidy Library reports makers with no items and can remove them.
• The Curator can find near-duplicate names for you and proposes a merge that you approve or decline.

Vocabulary and rosters

Each collection type's starting roster and its classification terms are editable. Open the type editor from the Type menu on the New Collection sheet and choose Edit or Delete Custom Types…. Anything you add is marked Added by you. See Collection types.
